HOW TO PREPARE
You may want to measure the area of space first and plan for stencil placement for the whole design layout prior to painting. Reference stencil sizes for planning. * This can be done on any asphalt area but must not interfere with parking and safety lines.
Step 1.) Prep the painting area. Power wash the area prior to painting and let the area dry.
Step 2.) Tape out what is to be painted. If using a stencil, lay out the stencil and secure it with tape.
Step 2.) Paint the first layer of paint using either a brush or a roller. Make sure the entire stencil area is covered but do not lay it on to thick. Leave the stencil in place and wait for the paint to dry.
Step 4.) Wait about an hour for the first coat of paint to dry. Then apply the second coat. (While the paint is drying all brushes or rollers should be put in a Ziploc bag out of the sun. This alleviates problems with the brushes drying out.)
Step 6.) Clean all brushes and rollers. Wipe down the stencils of any wet paint.
Step 7) Plan to store extra paint for touch ups.
Step 8) Devise a plan for a staff member, custodian or parent to touch up paint prior to the start of each school year.

OBTAINING SUPPORT AND
MANPOWER
- With smaller projects a group of creative teachers can be more than enough help.
- With larger areas PTO/Parent involvement, Churches, and Neighborhood associations can help--especially with planned one or two day painting events.
- P.E. teacher and art teacher are great tools to use for planning and reference. If willing get your special area teachers to help plan a project for the school and build what kids will use most.
- Art teacher and school counselors/psychologists can help plan social behavior changes by planning signs/mural/paint areas.
- Fifth graders can run a fundraiser and help paint with a planned legacy project.
